Webinar Episode 2. Feb 2023

Welcome to the second live webinar with our Founder Joel Proskewitz.

The questions addressed and their respective time stamps were as follows:

0:33 - Introduction to the webinar format and the past episode access.

2:52 - Recent themes and a short case study considering how important imaging scans are.

11:22 - As a spine surgery patient how do you answer the question - “How is your back?” It’s pain that can’t be seen by family and friends. How do you respond without offending or boring the question asker.

15:40 - If the pain mechanism is the movement of spinal flexion and after a procedure to remove the pain cause is successful, when can you reintroduce spinal flexion? As a patient you are going to need to flex your spine in normal life. Joel introduces the end range spinal flexion concept, convincing the central nervous system movement aren’t injury inducing and post operative scaring effects.

26:02 - Is pilates good for a stenosis and scoliosis diagnosed patient? Joel explains typical scoliosis diagnosis types. He also highlights the ‘Schroth’ physiotherapy methodology. Joel also talks through stenosis types for the spine patient. The fitness world is a very territorial environment. Consider what exercise you enjoy, doesn’t hurt you and that you will be consistent with.

41:55 - Pilates flattening of spine and the ‘Back Mechanic’ view on this movement. Prof Stu McGill addresses flexion based ‘discogenic’ patients specifically.  The book was written to try to ‘nip the problem in the bud’. Back Mechanic provides tools to assess and question that flexion movement.

49:40 - How hard should I train after my surgery and the 70% rule? Consistency trumps intensity.

52:35 - Stenosis and stability exercises are not necessarily the answer for spinal patients.

54:30 - Thank you for the very smart questions and support.
