Neutral Spine
In this video, we discuss the concept of ‘neutral spine’.
The human spine can move in many different directions; it can bend forward, backwards, rotate and bend sideways. All of these movements are normal and encouraged. However, immediately post surgery, it is best to find a neutral spine position, which is defined as your spine’s most stress free position. In a neutral position, the muscles of the spine are contributing to support the spine, whereas when you move away from neutral, this increases the contribution of the ligament structures and may impose too much stress in the early stages of your post spine rehabilitation.
Understanding how to find your spine’s neutral position and working from there to gradually increase your movement proficiency is a top priority for the post spine surgery patient.
